Revolutionary Blockchain-based Smart Meters Drive Peer-to-Peer Energy Efficiency in Medellín

Updated: Oct 18, 2023

By Jaya Bijoor

Case Study:

In 2021, the Transactive Energy Colombia Initiative and Grid Singularity collaborated in Medellín, Colombia, where blockchain-based smart meters were trialed to make the first peer-to-peer energy platform. In this trial, others in the network dynamically sold or bought excess electricity to optimize usage costs and reduce overall consumption. The trial found that energy bills would be reduced by up to 7 percent and improve self-sufficiency and self-consumption values by 18.2 percent and 51.6 percent, respectively.
